About
Often called 'Little Tibet' or 'The Land of High Passes,' Ladakh is a remote region in the Trans-Himalayan zone. At an average altitude of 3,500m (11,500 ft), it features dramatic moonscapes, pristine lakes (Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri), and ancient Buddhist monasteries. The region was opened to tourism only in 1974 and retains its unique Tibetan Buddhist culture. The road journey via either Manali or Srinagar is legendary.
Highlights
Pangong Tso Lake - stunning blue lake at 4,350m
Nubra Valley - double-humped Bactrian camels and sand dunes
Thiksey Monastery - 'Little Potala' with 12-story complex
Khardung La - one of the world's highest motorable passes (5,359m)
Magnetic Hill and Sangam (Indus-Zanskar confluence)
Hemis Festival (usually June/July) - masked dances

How to Reach
Connections and journey times below are starting points for research, not live schedules. Confirm actual services for your dates with the operator.
By Air
Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (Leh) - flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Srinagar. Book window seat for Himalayan views!
By Rail
Nearest station: Jammu Tawi (700 km), then road journey.
By Road
Access via Manali or Srinagar is seasonal and weather-dependent. Check current road openings, restrictions, acclimatization and permits before planning either route.
Traveler Tips
- 1Plan acclimatization with a travel-health clinician before flying to Leh; two days do not guarantee readiness for further ascent
- 2Plan gradual ascent and acclimatization. Extra water does not prevent altitude illness; drink normally and avoid overhydration
- 3Discuss your route and any altitude medication with a travel-health clinician before travel; do not self-prescribe
- 4Book accommodations in advance for July-August
- 5Carry cash - ATMs are unreliable and limited outside Leh
- 6Road conditions vary - 4WD vehicles recommended for Nubra/Pangong
Safety Notes
Important Safety Information
- •Do not ascend with altitude symptoms. Worsening symptoms require descent and medical assessment; breathlessness at rest, confusion or loss of coordination are urgent emergencies
- •Carry warm layers even in summer - temperatures drop rapidly
- •Inform someone of your travel plans
- •Check road conditions before long journeys
