About

Spiti Valley, meaning 'The Middle Land' between India and Tibet, is one of the most remote and spectacular regions in India. At an average elevation of 4,270m, this cold desert features dramatic barren mountains, ancient Buddhist monasteries perched on cliff edges, and pristine high-altitude lakes. Key Monastery, Dhankar, Tabo (over 1,000 years old), and the highest post office in the world at Hikkim make Spiti a bucket-list destination for adventure travelers.

Highlights

Key Monastery — stunning hilltop gompa at 4,166m

Tabo Monastery — 1,000+ year old Buddhist art (Indian Ajanta)

Chandratal Lake — 'Moon Lake' at 4,300m with turquoise waters

Hikkim — world's highest post office (4,400m)

Dhankar Monastery — dramatic cliff-edge monastery

Kunzum Pass — 4,551m pass connecting Spiti to Lahaul

  • •Roads are unpaved and dangerous — only travel in daylight
  • •No mobile network in most of Spiti — BSNL has some coverage
  • •Carry emergency food and water on road journeys
